Heavenly Father, we come to you with humble hearts, asking for your mercy upon all mankind. Let your peace flow through nations, across borders, and into every home. Calm the storms of hatred, silence the drums of war, and replace pride with compassion.
Heal our broken world. Let us not grow tired of praying, hoping and believing. May we, in our little ways, be instruments of your peace and love.
Alleluia! Christ is Risen! In our gospel account today, we hear of the great mystery of our faith, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. That trip to the tomb most probably had a deep impact on Peter and the other disciple who was with him. It likely suspended their feelings of grief, and started them pondering, Could it be as Jesus said? Could He truly be risen? They would soon see Jesus, eat with him by the Sea of Galilee, and receive the Holy Spirit. They would be strengthened to carry out the mission entrusted to them, that of preaching the Gospel and of building up leading the church. From that day on, the Apostles would grow in wisdom, strength and holiness, and would not shrink from the work that lay before them.
The same can happen for us when we encounter the Risen Lord. If we let him, Jesus can change our hearts so that we, too, will never be the same again. Jesus is still calling people to become witnesses to the Resurrection, even now, more than two millennia after it first took place. The Risen Lord wishes to draw our attention to heaven, so that we might see and think of what is above. Jesus is calling us forth to live our faith more deeply, with the sure and certain hope that we are heaven bound on our pilgrim journey through life.
It is natural for worldly people to look at an empty tomb and feel just like it—empty. Witnesses to the Resurrection, such as us, look at the empty tomb and our hearts are filled with faith, and we believe, precisely because of what we cannot see inside of it - the body of Jesus. This reality holds open new possibilities for us.
We can come to seek Jesus and experience him in many and varied ways. We can come to encounter him in the Eucharist, as he nourishes us and strengthens us with himself every time we receive Holy Communion. He can speak to us through Sacred Scripture, as well as in the silence of our hearts. We can encounter Jesus in one another and see his face as we serve the needs of the poor. As we continue our celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus, let us give thanks for the gift of faith by which we are saved. Let us also give thanks for being able to see what others cannot, the face of Christ in one another.
May this Easter season be one of true joy and blessings for you and your loved ones!
