Heavenly Father, we come to you with humble hearts, asking for your mercy upon all mankind. Let your peace flow through nations, across borders, and into every home. Calm the storms of hatred, silence the drums of war, and replace pride with compassion.
Heal our broken world. Let us not grow tired of praying, hoping and believing. May we, in our little ways, be instruments of your peace and love.
Happy Belated Birthday!!! On June 2nd, we the parish family, celebrated our 59th Birthday. The Lord truly has been good to us! May he continue to bless us for many more years to come!
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. We hear in Scripture Jesus saying, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” It is easy to imagine the wheels turning in the minds of that first audience: “Wait, what? Did he just say what I think he said?” And then, just to make sure he was being clear, Jesus says: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” It is possible that our familiarity with this passage can lead us to gloss over what a bold statement this must have seemed to his original hearers and still to many to this day. Eat a man’s flesh, drink his blood? How can this man say this?
First, Jesus can say this and do this because he is no ordinary man. From an ordinary man, these words would indeed seem crazy. But, as Peter confesses a few verses later in this same chapter and as we today echo: We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. At every Mass we profess that Jesus is the Son of God, the Word made flesh. He is the one through whom all things came into being and in whom all things exist. In him, the second person of the Holy Trinity dwelt among us; through him, our human nature was redeemed, reconciled to the Father, and freed from the slavery of sin and death. He is the risen one who now stands before the throne of God, interceding on our behalf. And he is the one who gives us his flesh and blood on the altar for us to partake and become one with him, and through him, one with each other.
But the words flesh and blood are vivid and it is understandable if we sometimes find ourselves a bit confused about what Jesus meant. We know Jesus didn’t mean we should become cannibals or vampires. We also know that he didn’t mean that the bread was just a symbol meant to remind us of him in some vague way. Just as we have come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, we have come to believe, to know, that that same risen Christ is truly and substantially present in the consecrated bread and wine. The words flesh and blood, together with soul and divinity, speak to the fullness of who Christ is, the fullness of who it is we receive. The King of kings and Lord of lords, who humbled himself to take on human flesh, humbles himself to come to us in the simple gifts of bread and wine, becoming one with us. What a gift!
As we celebrate this great Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, let us always receive this sacrament with gratitude and faith.
The Prayer of the Faithful is a unique style of prayer that is not very common in our western liturgy. In a litany format it gathers our concerns, our needs, and our intentions and gives voice to them in prayer within the context of what we have heard in scripture and in the homily. We express this petition believing that God is all-powerful and acknowledging that the divine action and redeeming activity still go on in our world. God’s interest is in the local and private needs that we have, as well in as the universal needs of our church and our world. We need to remember that in this kind of prayer we come together as members of the kingdom, a kingdom that extends far beyond our own private worlds. Sometimes this litany is spontaneous, sometimes it is formal, sometimes sung. Whatever format it takes, it needs to have a certain flexibility in order to express the real concerns that are unique to this liturgy in this parish, at this time.

As we all know, the month of May is dedicated to our Blessed Mother and I believe that we started this month off on the right foot by honoring Mary with our parish May Procession. It was truly an inspirational evening and I am grateful for all of you taking time out of your busy schedule to honor this great woman of faith. May, Mary our Mother, continue to pour forth her blessings upon us, her sons and daughters and as a parish family.
Speaking of a great woman of faith, Mrs. Judy Magee retired on May 28. I know that Judy has been a part of our parish family and it will be hard to see her go. Judy informed me months ago that she would like to retire at the end of the year. I know God will bless her during these days of retirement and I believe she will enjoy all of them; especially with her grandchildren!
With that in mind, I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Janet Fiatoa has been hired as the Director of Faith Formation. Mrs. Fiatoa’s job description goes beyond just that of our Adult Faith Formation Program and OCIA; she will be involved in all aspects of faith formation for the parish from conception to natural death. She will be responsible for putting faith based programs together in all areas for all age groups. Mrs. Fiatoa has a lot to offer all of us as a parish family with her experience of 26 years in faith formation , and she is very excited and looking forward to meeting all of you. I believe she will be a welcomed addition to our parish staff and parish family of Saints Peter and Paul.
Please join me in thanking the Blessed Mother, for sending us great women of faith like Judy and Janet to our parish family; and may she place her mantle of love and peace around them and grant them numerous blessings in all they do!
